Roofing Squares Converter

Last reviewed How we calculate

Roofing is measured, priced and sold in squares, and a square is 100 square feet of roof. This converts between square feet, squares and square meters, and gives a rough shingle bundle count at the same time.

A roofing square is 100 sq ft of roof surface, about 9.29 m². It is measured on the slope, not on the ground, so convert the sloped roof area rather than the footprint.

How the conversion works

Divide square feet by 100 to get squares. One square is about 9.29 square meters, because a square meter is about 10.76 square feet. Most asphalt shingles are packed three bundles to a square, so the bundle count is the squares times three, rounded up.

A worked example

A roof of 1,500 sq ft is 15 squares, about 139.4 square meters or 166.7 square yards, and needs about 45 bundles of three-bundle shingles before waste.

Squares are measured on the slope

A square is 100 sq ft of roof surface, not of ground. A house with a 1,500 sq ft footprint has more than 15 squares of roof, because the roof slopes. Convert the sloped area, which the roof area calculator works out from the footprint and pitch, and add waste before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet are in a roofing square?
